The Ability II project supports the integration, empowerment, work orientation and inclusion of Helsinki-speaking Somali and Arabic-speaking home parents. The project offers low-threshold peer-to-peer training on Finnish society and online transactions. In addition, the project will create an application to inform illiteracy residents about basic services, parenthood and career opportunities, as well as contact points for both organisations and public authorities. The project participates in the development of the education and support services of the Stadi Adult College from the perspective of immigrant students. The typical steering challenges of the target group of the project will be addressed by a group of public experts and representatives of associations to improve and harmonise customer guidance and increase mutual understanding and trust. The Ability II project focuses on reaching and serving 210 parents in Helsinki who are at risk of exclusion. Parents will be provided with knowledge-oriented peer groups in their own language, produced in cooperation with organisations and public bodies. In peer-to-peer groups, participants learn about Finnish society, local services, children’s upbringing and their own opportunities to train and get employed by experts in the field. The instructor recruited by the project supports the empowerment of participants during the 18-week peer group process and provides service advice within resources. After 18 weeks, peer-to-peer participants change, although those willing can participate longer. Instructors in their own language (2) cooperate with the target communities and organisations in the development of materials and peer groups, in advisory and guidance work, and in the training and replacement of staff. In addition to peer groups, short practical workshops on the use of information technology will be offered to the target group. The instructors, in cooperation with Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, develop the contents of the workshops and organise workshops. During the workshops, customers learn to use e-banking, Wilma, KELA’s e-forms, to book appointments to a doctor. Workshops are held in other computer classes of Stadi’s adult school or city. Childcare is provided during the workshops. The project’s career counselor, with the support of instructors in their own languages, draws up a personal training and career plan with each client and ensures that there is a personal follow-up path for each client. Peer-to-peer graduates are directed to trainings or other places of participation according to their wishes and starting points. The project’s career counselor and the Stadi Competence Centre will work together to develop and implement a common training and career plan that meets the requirements of the TE services. The career counsellor also coordinates the co-development of the training and guidance services available to the target group with the partners. The career counselor participates in the development of the educational offer of the Stadi Adult College, so that the selection also includes preparatory low-threshold trainings. This will ensure that further pathways to working life are available for the target group of the project. The Ability II project, in cooperation with the communities and organisations of the target groups, the information and communication unit of the City Chancellery of Helsinki and the Infopankki service, develops an open source mobile phone application based on speech, pictures and videos, which specifically supports illiteracy residents. The application is based on the descriptions of municipal services for immigrants developed in the TAKU project, Infopankki texts where applicable, and materials already developed by other actors. The application will be free of charge for users and will be freely available at the end of the project. The app will be available for download from the City of Helsinki website and application stores. In Finnish, Arabic and Somali, the app presents services and topics that are central to parenthood in Helsinki, as well as educational and career opportunities. The application also helps users to find more information from specialists or organisations in their own language.
