I learned from the stairs to working life

From the Steps to Work, the project responds to the regional need to streamline the transition between the final stages of studies and the working life of students with a migrant, international and Romani background. The most challenging studies take place at the end of the studies and, among other things, improving the effectiveness of Finnish language learning and additional support are an important prerequisite for the completion, graduation and employment of the studies. Strengthening the cultural sensitivity and competence of professionals contributes to equality and social cohesion. A large proportion of the students in the target group are women, so the project also promotes gender equality by supporting women’s studies and employment. Target groups of the project:- Students in SDO SOTE with a Romani background and Diakin SOTE and Church students- in Oamk, international degree students in business and data processing, whose studies do not progress at the normal pace, and who need special support to complete their studies, build working life networks and increase employment capacity. the main objective of the project is to support the smoothness of the final studies of immigrant, international and Roma students and to improve employment efficiency, as well as to strengthen the cultural sensitivity and guidance skills of workplaces. The main objectives are sub-objectives: supporting the smoothness of the final stage of studies, supporting the employment of students and graduates, and strengthening the skills of working life representatives.Particular objective 1. Supporting the smooth running of final stage studies1.1. Support workshops for professional subjects 1.2. Finnish language support workshops1.3. Individual support and guidance 1.4. Enhancing teamwork, peer support and mentoring1.5. End-stage traineeship/job learning support1.6. Support for the thesis/portfolioworkPart 2. Supporting the employment of students and graduates2.1. Creating networks for working life during studying2.2. Strengthening job-search skills and support for finding summer jobs/jobs2.3. Through positive examples, influencing attitudesPart 3 Strengthening the skills of the representatives of the working lifeProject results: 1) Support models for the final stage of studies. Students will receive additional support and guidance, which will improve their professional Finnish level (internal language for international students), cope with the final stage of their studies, find places in the field of internship/job learning and get good feedback from there and the thesis/portfolios correspond to the criteria set for them. 2) Students have created networks for working life during their studies, job search skills have increased, support is available for finding summer jobs and jobs. Positive examples of working life have strengthened students’ faith in graduation and employment and contribute to a change of attitude in the workplace. 3) Representatives of educational institutions and working life have received training on cultural sensitivity and guidance and are able to use it in their own work. The objectives of the project are in line with the priorities of the Operational Programme for Northern Ostrobothnia (2017-2018): e.g. promoting regional employment experiments, supporting the inclusion of young people in the labour market, improving the situation of those in a weak position on the labour market, and ensuring the functioning and integration of migrant educational pathways. Indirectly, the objectives, measures and results of the project will also help to strengthen the communities of immigrants, international students and Roma students, as well as to have a positive impact on public opinion and employers’ perceptions of the employment of people from different cultural backgrounds.
