Chetanes naal — educational pathways

The overall objective of the Chetanes naal — education pathways project is to increase the equality, inclusion and well-being of Roma. The project focuses on the measures required by the Progress Report on the Roma Policy Programme (2013). The aim of the project is that, with particular attention to the transition and articulation stages of education, the Roma’s educational attainment will improve employment opportunities. The second key objective of the project is to increase the skills of school staff, guidance staff, municipal actors, authorities and decision-makers in Roma culture and Roma education. As a result, equality and cooperation and know-how between the various actors in the field of education and training of the Roma will be improved. Its main implementer and project co-ordinator is Diakonia University of Applied Sciences. Participators include the Finnish Romani Forum ry, the cities of Helsinki, Tampere and Salo, the Helsinki Deaconess Institute Foundation sr./Vamos Services, the Parish College and the Otava College. The project has been prepared by a large network of representatives of Roma councils, Roma organisations and Roma associations in different regions, in addition to participants. The objectives of the project, the key actions and the results to be achieved have been produced in cooperation with the above-mentioned network. Project results and related measures: 1) Transitions between levels of education are smooth and the participation of Roma young people in education has increased. Models have been created to support transition and joint phases in different environments. Measures will be taken to create support elements within education and training at different levels of education, to build new approaches to the articulation phases of education, to develop and disseminate peer-to-peer activities and collaborative learning opportunities for young people, and to train mentoring and joint support staff. In addition, a model for multidisciplinary support for the transition and joint stages of young and adult Roma studying in institutional settings (prisons, etc.) has been developed.2) Models have been created to increase adult Roma’s educational capacity and participation in education. To achieve this, training will be carried out to improve study and job search capacities, support staff for guidance and joint stages, development of guidance practices and peer support models.3) The transition from education to work has improved. The objective will be pursued by developing cooperation between Roma associations, Roma students and employers in the regions and by creating an action concept for pedagogical cooperative activities.4) Project coordination has ensured the co-development and integration into basic activities of the models of support for national joint and transition phases transferred and applied to different environments and other results of the project as the main results of the project. The objective will be achieved by communicating the project in different media and in the project’s electronic working environment, disseminating results across the country, ensuring the involvement of the Roma population in the implementation of the project, organising regional and national seminars and workshops, facilitating cooperation between project workers and participants, compiling good practices and modellings developed into nationally applicable models, conducting thesis and dissertation within the project and assessing the achievement of the project results. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Nevo Tiija — New Time (ESR Action Line 5, Ministry of Social Affairs and Health) project.
