The KYS ERVA area lacks a driving polyclinic specialising in challenging, multiprofessional driving health assessments, to which the most challenging driving health assessments could be sent from primary and occupational health care to the authorities for examination. The number of driving licences has increased, drivers are increasingly older and increasingly suffer from a number of illnesses that may have an impact on the driving health of a person. The increasing number of challenging driving health assessments currently puts an excessive burden on primary care, as obtaining a driving licence requires the opinion of several specialists and cannot succeed by one medical specialist. In addition, driving health assessments of professional drivers should be carried out quickly, reliably and those carrying out assessments should be familiar with up-to-date legislation and Trafi’s guidance. More and more often, there are also so-called challenging driving health assessments among professional drivers, which require a wide range of specialist skills. The aim of the KYS Ajopoli project is to launch a separate driving polyclinic under the auspices of Kuopio University Hospital KYS Ajopoli and a centre of competence for driving health. The concrete actions of the project include: 1) KYS Driving Politics to start operations in KYS; 2) Disclosure of referral practices to all healthcare units with special responsibility in order to guide KYS Ajopol to the right types of subjects; 3) piloting preventive driving fitness activities for professional drivers and 4) expanding the operations into a centre of expertise in the field of driving health. The vision for the future is that KYS Ajopol will act nationwide as a centre of expertise in the field of driving health, driving rehabilitation, training, research and development. For the pilot of preventive driving rehabilitation, we recruit about 40 professional drivers with many health risk factors and are at high risk of losing their driving health and driving license — their profession. They are also a risk to road safety. The aim of the preventive roadworthiness pilot is to develop efficient driving fitness as part of the services offered through KYS Ajopol. Rehabilitation could contribute to the driver’s health risk factors, to reduce the number and duration of sick leave for drivers, to influence well-being and well-being at work, to affect the length of working lives and to prevent a change of profession for health reasons.
