After the analysis of the Lithuanian energy sector and the identification of the main challenges in the National Energy Independence Strategy, three basic and interlinked principles were formulated. These include energy independence, competitiveness and sustainable development. Energy independence ensures freedom to choose the most energy resources and sources of energy that meet the needs of the state’s energy security and the interests of Lithuanian consumers, and to purchase energy resources at the most favorable price. This principle can be implemented in the electricity sector by ensuring sufficient competitive local electricity generation capacity, thus meeting the demand for basic generation and domestic electricity demand. The strategy envisages the continued intensive use of renewable energy sources (RES) for electricity and heat production and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Given the focus on RES integration, the transmission network needs to be reliable and equipped to reliably integrate electricity grid users to meet their expectations. The construction of the new line Kretinga-Benaičiai VE TP will ensure the reception and transmission of the existing power generated by VE, as well as ensure the reliability of the transmission network and increase reliable power supply. The project would improve the reliability of the system and optimise the operation of the electricity market. Better integration of power generators into the electricity transmission system will increase the availability of cheaper electricity, creating benefits for consumers.
