As the school network is transformed and the number of pupils decreases, the number of schools is also decreasing and they are moving geographically away from the place of residence of the pupils. Article 36(1) and (2) of the Law on Education of the Republic of Lithuania states that pupils living in villages, towns and cities more than 3 km from school who are enrolled in pre-school and general education programmes and pupils who have special educational needs and are unable to enter the school themselves must be transported to and from school. The aim of the project is to increase the efficiency of the network of educational institutions by ensuring the accessibility of the transport service, i.e. to help municipal authorities to ensure that pupils are brought to school. During the project, activities will be implemented — purchase of targeted vehicles to facilitate the accessibility of educational institutions. The project will be implemented in 2015-2020. 5 procurements and 272 school buses are planned to be procured and transferred to the municipal schools in the country, which will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of buses. Buses will be purchased centrally. The results of the project are aimed at schools in all municipalities of the country. The project will ensure the right of a minimum of 76432 pupils who are enrolled in pre-primary and general education programmes.
