Introduction of traffic safety and environmental measures on TEN-T roads 2014-2020. Phase I

The objective of improving road safety is to make Lithuania one of the top 10 performers of the European Union (or 60 deaths per million inhabitants) in terms of the number of road users killed in the country. A large number of road accidents in Lithuania are related to irresponsible behaviour of people at the steering wheel or on the road, as well as inadequate traffic organisation. The number of accidents is decreasing, but compared to other European countries, they are among the worst in Lithuania. Public awareness of traffic culture, mutual respect and assistance to others is also insufficient and there is a lack of engineering measures to improve road safety. Examples from foreign countries show that the implementation of engineering road safety measures makes it possible to significantly reduce the number of accidents. Project "Implementation of traffic safety and environmental measures on TEN-T roads 2014-2020: Phase I" is scheduled to be implemented in 2014-2016. It is planned to build the junctions of Žiežmariai, Moluvėnai and Žemaitkiemis of different levels, and circular — junctions of Vilkaviškis, Pasvalys, Jonava and Birštonas. It should be noted that the reconstruction of the junctions of Žiežmariai and Moluvėnai would speed up the process of compliance with the AM category of the Vilnius-Kaunas section. The project will implement 7 traffic safety measures and improve traffic conditions for drivers and pedestrians.
