Decommissioning of the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility The Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility (hereinafter ‘Maišiagala Storage Facility’) stores unsorted and untreated short-lived and long-lived radioactive waste. The comprehensive safety assessment found that even the restructured engineering barriers of the Maišiagala storage facility for long-lived radioactive waste cannot guarantee long-term safety and can therefore only be operated as a storage facility for radioactive waste and cannot be converted into a disposal facility. The environmental and public impact of the repository is increased by the proximity of Bartkuškis telmological reserve and Kernavė Cultural Reserve (UNESCO World Heritage Site). In order to eliminate this impact, radioactive waste will be removed and treated from the storage facility and the site of the storage site will be removed from the control of nuclear facilities. It is expected that the waste will be removed and the site treated by the end of September 2023 as part of a project funded by the European Union.share on FacebookTwitterLinkedinEmailreport an issue
