Development of municipal waste infrastructure in Kaunas district municipality

Kaunas District Municipality currently separately collects mixed municipal waste, bulky waste, electrical and electronic equipment waste, construction and demolition waste, household hazardous waste, secondary raw materials — paper and cardboard, glass, plastic, metal, including packaging waste, and textile waste. Mixed municipal and secondary raw material waste is collected at land-based waste collection sites. The vast majority of these sites are located between residential houses, large supermarkets and other crowded places. The waste collection infrastructure thus set out is uncomfortable and difficult to access for both residents and waste managers. Containers are constantly suffering from adverse effects of the environment, due to uneven coating are moved freely, their coating is damaged. Obsolescence containers are often left open or damaged and animals are leaked and the wind takes the waste they contain into the environment. The existing waste management infrastructure is depreciated and does not fully meet the needs of the population. The municipality’s financial resources have so far been able to purchase only a part of the new containers. In the meantime, upgrading the infrastructure as a whole would require much greater investment. The lack of funds does not provide the necessary waste management infrastructure and achieves significant changes in the separate collection of waste. Some of the sites currently in operation should be liquidated and equipped with new sites in order to achieve optimal results, while others should be refurbished. The convenience of the location of these sites in relation to the population will have a direct impact on the sorting of secondary raw materials and on the reduction of the amount of such waste in landfills, which directly determines the cost of municipal waste management services. It is expected that the implementation of the project will improve the overall attractiveness of the population’s living and working environment and improve the waste sorting sites by refurbishing existing container sites.
