Establishment of Children’s Rare Diseases Centre of Excellence at LSMU Hospital in Kaunas Clinics

In order to provide high-quality healthcare for children with rare diseases, it is necessary to ensure the earliest possible diagnosis, timely treatment and evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment. At present, the main problem is inadequate medical equipment (part of which is outdated, lack of early diagnosis, effectiveness of treatment, etc.) and different assessment of disease diagnosis and treatment by specialists in different fields. To solve these problems, it is necessary to purchase specialised equipment adapted to children of all ages and to draw up unified methodological recommendations. During the project, medical equipment meeting modern standards was purchased for rare diseases of paediatric cardiology rheumatology, diagnosis and treatment of renal, blood and oncological diseases, respiratory, nervous system and eye diseases, which will allow to expand the range of outpatient and day-care services provided, and the conditions for providing optimal services for the patient in the shortest possible time will be improved. Considering that there are currently no standardised recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases, the project foresees to prepare methodological recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of children’s lungs and respiratory, kidneys, spine, oncological, cardiological, autoimmune, digestive system and genetic diseases, which will be made available to healthcare professionals at all levels. The target group of the project is children (0-17 years old) with rare diseases. The aim of the project is to provide assistance to children from all over Lithuania. The equipment purchased during the project and the methodological recommendations developed will help to ensure the needs of the target group to receive high-quality and accessible early diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases.
