White turtles (Emys orbicularis) and red bellies (Bombina bombina) are endangered species protected by Lithuanian law. The main causes of the decline are the loss of habitats suitable for them due to the growth of bushes, a significant decrease in the number of suitable white turtle beds due to the absence of open, grassy, shrub-free areas on the coasts of water bodies, as well as the high percentage of juvenile deaths. The aim of the project is to increase the populations of white turtles and red-bellied hammers by carrying out breeding and habitat management of individuals. The objective will be achieved by artificially rearing juveniles of ball turtles and red-bellied hammers up to one year of age in the Lithuanian zoo until they are released to selected habitats in Meteliai Regional Park. The partner will improve the habitat status by cutting trees and bushes, mowing meadows, protecting white turtle patches and red-bellied hammer habitats.
