According to the data of the Institute of Hygiene, the incidence of oncological diseases in our society is constantly increasing. Despite depopulation in the last 20 years, the incidence of oncological diseases in Lithuania has almost doubled in absolute terms (from 12849 inhabitants in 1997 to 24265 in 2016), while the standardised indicator is the incidence of malignancy per 100 000 inhabitants more than twice (from 359.4 per 100 000 inhabitants in 1997 to 846 per 100 000 inhabitants in 2016). The aim of this project is to improve and ensure radiation treatment of malignant tumors in accordance with modern standards, not only for the residents of the target areas, Kaunas city but also the whole country, thus contributing to effective and timely assistance in order to reduce health inequalities and indicators of morbidity, mortality from oncological diseases and long-term disability. The project will modernise the radiation therapy base of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Hospital Kaunas Clinics, i.e. the acquired linear accelerator, will improve the quality of radiotherapy and reduce its undesirable effects on the patient. The purchased equipment will be used to treat patients with prostate, lung, breast, rectal cancer, head and neck tumors, pancreatic cancer and other oncological diseases. The intended radiotherapy equipment will be adapted to modern radiotherapy procedures, which ensure a high degree of accuracy in the distribution of ionising radiation in the body.
