Computer, Structure and Systems Biology Centre (CossyBio)

The project aims to enable the scientific community to understand and manage biological processes at molecular level by developing research and computational modelling on the structure and function of biomolecules and biological systems, and to develop high added value scientific results. Within the scope of the project, Lithuania will become a full member of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and a member of the Structural Biology Infrastructure (Instruct-ERIC). CossyBio connects the research infrastructure of the Institutes of Biotechnology and Biochemistry of Vilnius University Centre for Life Sciences and Institutes of Neurosciences of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. In order to become a full member of international R & D infrastructure and to remain competitive, CossyBio infrastructure must be equivalent to the world’s leading infrastructures, and therefore infrastructure development and modernisation are essential. The need for additional infrastructure relates to the critical dependence of the life and health sciences, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries on the ability to understand and manage biological processes at molecular level. CossyBio’s goal is to become a leading training centre for the next generation of structural biology researchers. CossyBio infrastructure resources will be used by internationally recognised research teams such as: Prof. V. Šikšnys has received worldwide recognition due to the discovery of genome editing tool CRISPR/Cas9, Prof. S. Klimašauskas has been awarded a prestigious European Scientific Council (ERC) grant. There is no doubt that the results of the studies to be carried out on the basis of CossyBio and international infrastructures will contribute to significant discoveries in biomedical sciences that can be applied in clinical practice for the effective treatment and prevention of diseases. Lithuania’s integration into Europe’s strongest life science networks — EMBL and Instruct-ERIC — and the upgrade of CossyBio infrastructure would create conditions for life sciences and technological breakthroughs that promote significant biotechnology, bi
