The project’s investments aim to enable the physical, technological and biomedical sciences and business community to solve the scientific challenges that require large computing resources. This will be achieved by modernising Lithuanian High Performance Scientific Computing LitGrid-HPC infrastructure, modernising the existing open access centres of Vilnius University HPC Saulėtekis (Saulėtekio al. 3, Vilnius) and ITAPC (Didlaukio str. 47, Vilnius), which have been developed for more than 10 years, which provide users with the necessary computing opportunities and related services in an integrated and efficient manner. The necessary part of LitGrid-HPC infrastructure development is the connection to the EGI international infrastructure. The Lithuanian supercomputer infrastructure will be raised to the international level and will allow the total LitGrid-HPC computing capacity to be increased by about 10 times. After the implementation of the project, the availability of the services provided will be increased — large R & I computing resources, capacitive data storage and licensing software will become available to a wider range of researchers, will provide access to the most powerful high-performance computing resources in Europe for their research, they will be able to join international research networks, quickly take over the latest ideas and foreground technologies and apply them in Lithuania. The project contributes to the achievement of the objective of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, which is to increase the prosperity of the region, in line with the policy area “Innovation” set out in the Strategy’s Action Plan. Modernisation of Litgrid HPC infrastructure, opening up the international research network and participation in EGI activities will strengthen interregional cooperation: enable researchers from other countries to carry out joint projects, accelerate the exchange of new knowledge and ideas, which will increase the value of knowledge creation in the participating countries. Membership of the EGI and the development of LitGrid-HPC infrastructure opportunities will have a positive impact on the development and development of many scientific fields and certain economic sectors.
