Implementation of engineering traffic safety measures on national and district roads. Phase II

The number of road users killed in Lithuania is decreasing every year, but compared to other EU countries, the road safety situation remains one of the worst in our country. Public awareness of traffic culture is also insufficient and there is a lack of engineering measures to improve road safety. As part of the project, the road safety situation is planned to improve in 2018-2020: 1) to reconstruct thirteen junctions to safer junctions on national roads (most of them will be reconstructed into circular roads), significantly reducing the likelihood of a traffic accident; 2) to construct two sections of pedestrian and cycling paths near the country roads, thus separating cyclists from car traffic and at the same time significantly reducing the likelihood of an accident; 3) to install 30 stationary speed meters (SGMs) along the national roads and to improve the Administrative Offences Register (ANR) administered by the Informatics and Communications Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania. All speed violations recorded in the SGM will be transmitted to the ANR. In addition, the SGM will transfer the registration plates of all vehicles to a multifunctional infringement control system managed by the Road Directorate, and the data of that system may be used by the police, customs and special services in accordance with the procedure laid down by law. The implementation of the project will contribute to creating an attractive and safe environment, will have a positive impact on the economic development of Lithuania, will create safer traffic conditions for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, and will reduce the number of accidents.
