Improving the effectiveness of oncological disease screening programmes in central and western regions of Lithuania

In Lithuania, oncological diseases rank second in the overall mortality structure and the highest mortality rate is in the working age group (45-64). Experience in many countries shows that these problems can be addressed through effective oncological screening programmes recommended by the European Union. In Lithuania, screening programmes for cervical, breast and colon cancer are not effective. One of the most important criteria necessary for the implementation of effective programmes is the maximum inclusion of the target population in the programmes. According to the data of the State Patients’ Fund, in 2017 in Lithuania, preventive and early diagnostic programmes participated in: cervical cancer 15.3 %, breast cancer 23.4 %, colorectal cancer 24.0 % On the basis of an overview of the implementation of the European Commission’s guidelines for quality assurance of cancer screening programmes in the countries of the European Union prepared for the European Commission’s commission in 2017, it was found that Lithuania, unlike most other countries of the European Union, did not implement the recommended process components necessary for the effective implementation of the programmes — the lack of programme coordination centres responsible for the implementation of the programmes, and the lack of a database of screening programmes to monitor and control the inclusion of the entire population into the programme. This project will provide training for professionals providing personal health care, which will provide the knowledge and practical skills needed for the effective implementation of the cervical cancer screening programme. In accordance with the guidelines for quality assurance of inspection programmes approved by the European Commission, requirements for quality control and assurance of cervical screening programme will be prepared and adapted to Lithuania. Pilot coordination between the three programmes has been launched in Central and Western Lithuania. In order to achieve healthy ageing and to raise awareness among the population of the target areas, the project is being informed about the project in the country.
