In order to systematically improve the situation at level crossings, a programme for upgrading level crossings was launched in 2019 by selecting the most demanding level crossings to improve traffic safety, the reconstruction of which would bring the greatest benefit to society. The 21+ 848 km level crossing of Valčiūnai railway station, which is part of the freight route of the Trans-European Transport Corridor IX B, has been selected for modernisation as one of the most risky and unsafe. The aim of the project is to ensure safe traffic of trains, cars and pedestrians at the 21+ 848 km level crossing at Valčiūnai railway station. In order to ensure the safety and throughput of the most risky priority level crossings, additional traffic organisation and traffic safety measures are needed. During the implementation of the project, it is planned to modernise the 21+ 848 km level crossing signalling system of Valčiūnai railway station by installing level crossing alarm, train positioning equipment, pedestrian crossing signalling, video surveillance system, security/fire alarm, refurbishment of the station’s electrical centralisation, restoration of level crossing functionality in the traffic management and control system of the traffic control centre. After the implementation of the project, the safety of 21+ 848 km of the priority level crossing at Valčiūnai railway station will be increased, road capacity growth, reduced journey times by train and freight, increased level crossing users’ awareness of safe crossing traffic, reduced negative impact on the environment, reduction of CO2 emissions, elimination of the need to slow down trains before level crossing and speed up the level crossing.
