Construction of the second road on the section Livintai-Gaižiūnai

The project “Building a second road on the Livintai-Gaižiūnai section” is designed to improve the public sector in the social and economic context. The feasibility study found that the infrastructure capacity of the existing section of Livintai-Gaižiūnai did not correspond to the growing freight flows, the existing single track is old, deteriorated and the population is adversely affected by rail traffic noise. The project is one of the complex projects for the construction of second railway tracks, the implementation of which will contribute to increasing the capacity of Corridor IX B by destroying “narrow” railway sites. The aim of the project is to reduce passenger and freight time on corridor IXB by increasing the throughput of railway lines and by developing the 1 520 mm gauge railway infrastructure. The project consists of preparation of the work project, expert services, construction work, maintenance and project supervision services, adaptation of traffic management systems and other works. This project will increase the capacity of the section, the maximum train speed (up to 160 km/h), the development of the TEN-T network in Lithuania, which will improve traffic safety, reduce transport costs, environmental pollution and noise levels, while improving the functioning of local businesses and the conditions for labour mobility. The upgraded section of Livintai-Gaižiūnai railway line would allow freight and passengers to be transported in a shorter period of time. The project promotes the mobility of people and goods by facilitating travel, developing the tourism industry, logistics and intermodal transport. During the implementation of the project, it is planned to build 10.86 km of new railway track, to reconstruct the current 13.07 km railway track, to reconstruct existing bridges and ducts, switches, level crossings, to install a silencing wall, to restructure electrical, signalling and communication systems, to install fences, rain and drainage systems and to abolish the Livintai railway station.
