Provision of emergency telemedicine services in emergency medical units

The project aims to improve the accessibility and quality of emergency medical services in Lithuanian district/region hospital reception-emergency units by developing and implementing a model for the provision of emergency telemedicine services, thus reducing the exclusion between urban and rural residents. Specialised, multi-profile, high-level emergency medical care is provided in two major Lithuanian regions of Vilnius and Kaunas university medical institutions, i.e. Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Hospital Kaunas Clinics, Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Clinics, Public Institution Republic Vilnius University Hospital, which will participate in the pilot project. The project will invest in the equipment needed for the establishment of emergency telemedicine centres, which will help to set up an emergency telemedicine network between 12 medical institutions during a pilot period and training for healthcare professionals (telemedicine). The infrastructure currently available in 12 hospitals is not adapted to the provision of tele-emergency telemedicine services, thereby limiting the provision and quality of services. The establishment of a network of emergency telemedicine services will enable patients’ needs for high-quality and accessible emergency services, especially in district/regional hospitals, to be consulted by patients, doctors and nurses of these hospitals with tertiary-level health care professionals. During the training, healthcare professionals will acquire practical skills in the field of telemedicine, thanks to highly qualified specialists, proper assessment of the patient’s condition, examination and faster selection of the necessary treatment will be ensured. Accordingly, it is expected to contribute to the decreasing disability and mortality of the Lithuanian population from injuries and other external causes, as well as to the main chronic diseases — cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders.
