Reuse of ash in cement concrete

Waste incineration is a topical issue not only in Europe but worldwide. The incineration of municipal waste generates emissions, slag, bottom ash, fly ash, waste from waste treatment plants. It is estimated that about a quarter of the slag remains after burning a ton of municipal waste. Ash and slag can be used as building material, as a supplement to building material or as a substitute for civil and construction engineering structures (e.g. road construction and reconstruction, building foundations, etc.). The use of ash can reduce cement content in concrete, environmental pollution and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of the bottom ash of a cogeneration plant in which waste remaining after sorting is incinerated as a fuel on the physical and mechanical properties of cement concrete. The study will address two problems: 1) the secondary use of bottom ash from municipal waste combustion in the manufacture of cement concrete and 2) the saving of cement in forming mixtures, without impairing the characteristics of the final product. It would also address the global problem of reducing ash from municipal waste streams. During the ongoing study, the student will investigate the physical properties of the raw materials and bottom ash used, determine the effect of bottom ash on the reological properties of concrete dough, determine the impact of bottom ash on the physical and mechanical properties of concrete, and, based on the results of the studies, select the best amounts of bottom ash in mixtures. As part of the research, the student will acquire new competences and practical knowledge in scientific, technological and organisational activities, and the student’s research skills will be developed; the results of the study would also contribute to addressing the global problem.
