The project “Integrated Model for Urban Mobility Management — Phase I” aims to create the right environment for sustainable multimodal urban mobility to support the implementation of low-carbon urban development strategies. Through measures and investments in transport infrastructure, the project contributes to the achievement of the following specific objectives: — improving traffic conditions through flexible traffic regulation and urban travel alternatives;- improving the quality and access to public transport services;- improving the safety of the street network and the conditions of travel. The project covers two main components: — Upgrade of the system of Fast Bus Lines through reconstruction and rehabilitation of major transport routes and creation of a “fast bus corridor” on Democratia Blvd., new traffic organisation and optimisation of parking;- Introduction of an integrated traffic management system in the city, including automated junction management, traffic detection and video surveillance of key locations in the urban area.The implementation of the project will contribute to: promoting multimodality at urban level, improving the speed and quality of public transport services for sustainable change of travel patterns; improving the safety of the urban environment; improving junction capacity and favouring urban transport; the project builds on and contributes to the impact of a number of other initiatives of the Municipality of Burgas, such as the project “Integrated Urban Transport of Burgas”, financed under OPRD 2007-2013, the parking control system, areas with calm traffic, the bike rental system, the network of built cycle paths on the territory of the city, policies for expansion and renovation of pedestrian areas.
