In the 2007-2013 programming period The Municipality of Varna implements two projects related to the provision of the public transport service — the project “Integrated Urban Transport of Varna”, financed under OP “Regional Development” 2007-2013 and the project “Implementation of measures to improve the quality of life in the cities of Burgas, Varna, Stara Zagora and Pleven”, financed under OP “Environment 2007-2013”. Within the framework of the integrated urban transport project, 10 components were implemented. In order to build on the realised components and the chosen alternative in the feasibility study under this project proposal are included 3 components that are interconnected:- Component 1 — Extension and reconstruction of street arteries related to the optimisation of mass urban public transport (MGOT); — Component 2 — New vehicles for the MGOT;- Component 3 — Intelligent transport systems; In the development of the project an integrated territorial approach was used. The system of interconnected actions aims at a lasting improvement of the economic, social and environmental status of the municipality. The first two components are entirely related to the extension of the existing systems during the first phase of the urban transport project. The signing of a contract for public passenger transport with the carrier “Urban Transport” EAD and entrusting the operation of all lines on the territory of the municipality of Varna requires the extension of the bus fleet as well as the replacement of some of the vehicles in order to improve the quality of the service provided. This activity on the replacement of buses and trolleybuses started in the previous programming period and will continue during this programming period. In order to close the cycle of actions and interventions in this project is also included a rehabilitation activity of streets (covering also pedestrian underpasses, pedestrian traffic lights, accessibility, bicycle lanes, etc.) on which there is intensive traffic and lines of public urban transport.
