The overall objective of the project is to reduce the amount of municipal waste for landfilling and to increase the share of recycled and recovered waste in the municipality of Petrich, which constitutes a separate waste management region. An installation for pre-treatment of mixed municipal waste before landfilling with a capacity of 10 841 tonnes/year and a composting plant for the green waste generated on the territory of the municipality will be built with a capacity of 4 150 t/year and site infrastructure. Equipment for the operation of the installations and equipment for separate collection of green waste will be purchased. The two installations will be located close to the Petrich regional landfill. The investment under the project will also contribute to improving resource efficiency in the municipality of Petrich, as as a result of the investments the waste will become a resource — the composting plant will produce quality compost, and the pretreatment plant will separate the useful components from the mixed household waste and will be delivered for recycling. During the period of the project, the municipality will introduce a system for separate collection of green waste, which will include separate collection of garden waste from households in the town of Petrich, Parvomay, Marikostinovo, Mikhnevo village and from public parks and gardens in all settlements in Petrich municipality. The project will purchase 60 vessels with a volume of 1.1 m³ for separate collection of green waste from households and two waste collection trucks for transporting separately collected green waste in the municipality to the composting plant. The socio-economic benefits of implementing the project are to improve the quality of the environment for the residents of the municipality by reducing harmful emissions from the landfilling of waste; the creation of new jobs needed for servicing the system put in place for separate collection of green waste and for the operation of the two installed installations, etc.
