Thematic research collaborations that underpin innovative IT and Infocommunication solutions

Our consortium will create a research base in the field of ICT and computing, capable of operating effectively at European level. In particular, we aimed primarily at fundamental research needed to strengthen the role of the EIT Digital partnership, but we also facilitate the participation of our country in Horizon 2020, Future and Emerging Technologies and other European projects. The participating institutions are among the most outstanding research organisations of Hungary in the field of computer science, information technology and information communication. All three institutions are applying for the development of their sites in the convergence region: ELTE is developing in Szombathely and Martonvásár, BME Balatonfüred, PPKE Esztergom. The proposal consists of three different components from the professional side, which are closely aligned and mutually reinforcing. 1. The EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) Digital KIC (Knowledge and Innovation Community) combines innovation activities, higher education and preparation for entrepreneurship in a specific way. In EIT Digital, Hungary has been a member since 2012 in addition to Europe’s leading nations in innovation (United Kingdom, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden). The importance of participation is particularly important because the Hungarian node became a full member from the beginning of this year. The EIT’s main innovation areas are Action Lines, which are currently the Digital Cities, Digital Industry, Digital Infrastructure, Digital Wellbeing and Digital Finance from 2017. In order to strengthen the Hungarian participation, the basic objective of the project is to further strengthen the institutions’ fundamental research results in the field of “ICT and Computational Sciences” by increasing their innovation capacity. During the project we will broaden our cooperation with the research organisations of the EIT Digital association: we help the international embedding of Hungarian research by welcoming visiting researchers, conducting consortium building visits and developing joint tender topics. 2. Linking the basic research results of ELTE, BME and PPKE The three participants of the project consortium have already achieved significant results in the fields of IT, ICT and computer science. However, in the context of this call, it is essential that a joint research concept be implemented jointly by the consortium members and that scientific research is mutually reinforcing. The partners identified the following 3 pillars: a) Software development methods and IT security b) Information technology infrastructures and cyber-physical systems c) Intelligent data analysis These themes allow the three consortium partners to formulate coordinated research objectives, share their research experiences and combine research activities in a number of areas, as well as to make progress in these areas widely known as Carrier for EIT Digital projects. We strongly involve students, doctoral students, young researchers (we provide scholarships, wages) and support the presentation of the results at international conferences. The aim is to strengthen our visibility by supporting the participation of project leaders and senior researchers in conferences. We develop our research equipment pool by purchasing cloud infrastructure and server background developments and portable workstations at the sites. 3. Supporting scientific progress in areas outside the CMR The partners organise scientific conferences at all stages of work: in connection with pillar a) in Szombathely ELTE, in BME Balatonfüred in connection with pillar b) and on pillar c) in Esztergom PPKE. The conferences will be held at the end of the work phases, but further conferences will be planned in the middle of the work phases in relation to pillar c). At the conferences assigned to the second milestone, we strive to involve researchers from the Carpathian Basin. In the event of the fourth milestone conference, they will try to attract the relevant experts from all over Europe, and EIT Digital’s key professional leaders will be invited to “keynote speech”. In order to support knowledge transfer, we offer free participation and lectures for researchers and doctoral students from the affected regions. In addition to the above scientific events, the consortium also plans to organise R & D & I management trainings, including Horizon 2020 and EIT Digital information workshops, to which researchers, doctoral students and doctoral candidates from the region are invited. These events aim to improve the skills needed to write applications and to present European opportunities.
