Hun-BIO consortium: Full product innovations from excellent Hungarian biological bases to the development of competitive, high added value ecological food and feed

The “Action Plan for the Development of Ecological Farming” adopted by the Ministry of Agriculture aims at a significant increase in the area of organic farming and, at the same time, organic livestock by 2020. Notes that the enhancement of organic production should be facilitated, inter alia, by encouraging targeted research activities and improving integration. The objectives set out in IFOAM’s terminology in Organic 3.0 growth phase are similar. Currently, the fundamental problem in Hungary is the relatively low productivity of organic farming, the high risk of production due to the continental climate and its higher knowledge and capital requirements. In order to catch up, it is essential to strengthen the innovation culture and to put the results into practice quickly. It is clear that, in many cases, processing technologies have a strong interaction with the intrinsic values achieved in the production of the raw material, which in turn depends on plant breeding or animal husbandry purposes. The following factors are highlighted in our project. Biological innovation (proliferation materials, soils, nutrient replacement, plant protection), mechanical (mechanisation), organisational and organizational innovations (ICT, management, communication). Our ambition is to develop innovative products that can expect significant demand in the most demanding markets. The present project was therefore designed in accordance with the domestic and international objectives, with the recognised principles of the project: protecting the environment, fairness, care, health protection and the pursuit of high quality. The practical objectives of our R & D work include raising yields through genetic and breeding developments and introducing new feedstocks. By achieving the targets, domestic agro-bio production can move out of its current niche market and almost exclusively unprocessed raw material export position. By bringing new products to the market, we contribute to the innovation turn of the Hungarian agriculture and food industry on such a scale that we can occupy a worthy place in this dynamic segment of the world market. This will generate further innovation processes. The following 10 research and development activities serve the practical objectives set out: 1. Eco-intensive crop production system (seed, food and feed materials) 2. Biological funds (plant varieties) serving special needs based on organic breeding 3. For use in organic crop production — produced by the processing and composting of beer marc and tired kiesel land + beer marc juice — soil improver manufacturing technology 4. Prototyping of a multi-component plant conditioning product for use in organic crop production 5. Eco-seed cultivation technology with varieties such as the new Hungarian-bred white spelt and the optimum fall malting barley with a lower mycotoxin risk with high weed suppression 6. Technological development in the mill industry, in particular with regard to gentle dehulling of husked grains 7. Eco malting technology optimisation 8. Development of the processing of organic brewery by-products, with particular reference to the use of by-products of brewer’s yeast extruded organic brewer by-product, which is typically only locally and with low value 9. Other food research on extruded organic brewery by-product, such as natural-based additives in bakery products 10. Optimising the use of organic brewery by-products for feed purposes While the project’s focus is on optimising the utilisation of by-products rich in minerals, vitamins, enzymes and by-products rich in minerals, vitamins and enzymes, but not used so far, during the project, with special attention to beer marc, brewer’s yeast and tired-kovaland, in our project we create synergy between crop production, animal husbandry and feed and food processing activities carried out by consortium members, building an integrated ecological excellence network. In addition to our innovation efforts, by processing the data recorded during the project, we can obtain a significant information base for investment returns calculations and product chain optimisation. The development will make it possible to follow the fulfilment of the binding commitments during the maintenance period. The professional content of the project and the importance of the technologies to be developed are arguably aligned with the real economy processes, policy objectives, international and Hungarian scientific and market trends. In this way, the viability can be guaranteed both at the level of the consortium members (companies and research organisations) applying for funding, at the level of the agricultural and food sector and the national economy.
