Creating advanced materials and smart technologies at the University of Miskolc

A) In its “Innovative City of Knowledge” programme developed up to 2020, the University of Miskolc set the general objective of building its future work on strong innovation and cooperation, highlighting the focus essential to maintaining excellence, strengthening its domestic and international competitiveness and international visibility; giving a prominent role to the RDI activity in all of these. The programme has a dual base: it reflects the professional traditions and competences of the institution and the programme builds on the institution’s relationship system more strongly than before. The project identifies three focus areas or sub-projects (vertical dimension) as the scene for the RDI tasks: [RP-1] state-of-the-art materials and their tests; [RP-2] modern materials technologies; [RP-3] intelligent management and automation. The first two areas are synergistic and enable complementary research, according to the direct RDI themes of the partners. The third area combines the two basic dimensions and offers the possibility of independent activity in the framework of Industry4.0 research. The members of the consortium (horizontal dimension) led by the University of Miskolc (ME), BorsodChem Zrt. (BC), Robert Bosch Energy and Body Systems Automobile Electricity Components Manufacturer and Distributor Ltd. (Bosch) and ÉMI Construction Quality Control Innovation Nonprofit Ltd. (ENGLISH). The Wanhua Group is currently a global dominant player on the market for isocyanate-based products; in particular, the market leader in the domestic chemical industry is BC. One of the leading automotive parts manufacturers of the region and Hungary is BOSCH, with its innovation culture and innovative thinking, aiming to meet the market needs not yet formulated by mainstream. ÉMI credo is a sustainable development based on the opportunities of the future and the conscious resource management of the present. As today’s global competition is mainly value chains and competition from supplier networks, only network collaborations in the field of RDI can provide the necessary excellence and competences. FIEK is therefore a network of knowledge and competence. In addition, the previous cooperation between ME and partners is an additional basis and rationale for the Consortium. The structure of the focus areas and the project organisation allows for the inclusion of additional market needs and the accession of new partners during the maintenance period. The project also includes infrastructure improvements, new materials testing, materials technology, management and automation laboratories serve the sub-tasks, and the concentration of ME physical lab also serves the entire FIEK, ensuring the achievement of the general objectives of FIEK and long-term sustainability. The aim of the project is to create outstanding RDI results and to exploit them economically. The consortium partners, in the framework of real industrial problem solutions, create a new division of labour at every stage of their RDI activities, avoid building parallel capacities and create effective synergy chains of cooperation. Human and infrastructural developments underpin the development of a sustainable RDI system beyond the project, integration into partner organisations and operational processes. Three aspects of the coherence of the project and the cooperation of the partners deserve to be highlighted. On the one hand, the structure of the project matrix, which is the intersection of the three defined sub-projects (sub-tasks) and the tasks of the consortium partners’ RDI; on the other hand, the joint use of equipment and laboratories to be procured, which also affects all partners; thirdly, the joint solution of specific tasks in the RDI sub-areas defined by the partners. The cooperation envisaged in this project is a decisive step in a longer period. In the future, the aim is to lay the foundations for longer-term, larger and comprehensive RDI cooperation strategies, whereby consortium members can continue to have adequate RDI capacities at local level. Two of the consortium partners are multinational companies, part of a global group of companies. The resulting test background, the targeted results of the developments provide not only the consortium partner organisations, but also other companies of the Wanhua and Bosch groups with a world-class measurement, testing and inspection service provider background, as well as technological processes that can be incorporated into other products. B) The most effective provision of the strategic objectives of the emerging FIEK is a priority for the design of the project organisation. The resulting organisation is established under the direct authority of the Rector, separately from the other organisations of the ME, with independent research institute powers. Its operations are supervised by a Professional Supervisory Board, which consists of representatives of the consortium partners and of the supporting org...
