“Experienced spa: Bükfürdő’

Bük is located in the western Transdanubia tourist region of Hungary, Vas county, district Kőszeg. At the junction of Alpokalja and Kisalföld, the spa on the Répce Plain is 27 km from Szombathely and 47 km from Sopron. The proximity of the Austrian border is crucial for the development of the bathing area and the region. Bük was officially established in 1902 with the formation of Lower Beech, Central Beech and Upper Beech. The municipality was declared a city in 2007. Administratively, Bükfürdő is part of the city, where the spa is located, as well as a significant part of the commercial accommodation places and most of the hotels. The city’s international reputation is primarily due to the spa, which, building on local conditions, attracts many tourists to the settlement, with 1 million people per year. Bük is one of the 10 most popular Hungarian cities every year in terms of the number of nights. However, in order to be able to follow this expansion, significant improvements are needed. The amount of aid requested allows for the implementation of developments which the municipality would not be able to finance or would only be able to finance significantly later in time. By awarding the grant, the applicant can implement a development programme that creates the image of the spa resort and the milieu of the spa town, which is worthy of its history and faithfully testifies to its successful operation in the present. The development supported indirectly also has an indirect impact on the further measures set out in the spa development strategy, and may encourage their project promoters to implement the developments set out in the individual measures. The establishment of the elements of the short-term action plan outlined in the strategy would constitute an investment programme to the extent that it was not yet in the health resort, but is unlikely to be expected again in the long term. The support and the developments resulting from it also have a fundamental impact on the daily life and medium-term operation of the municipality. The day-to-day operation of project elements operated by the municipality is carried out by staff occupying the new jobs created by the applicant. With regard to the business premises transferred to the private company, the applicant will receive income from the rent, from which the operating costs of the self-operated facilities can be partially financed. In the medium term, the local government generates additional revenue from the increasing number of guests’ turnover as a result of the developments. The grant amount and the self-sufficiency provided by the municipality together are suitable for the project to contribute to the realisation of the vision expressed by the applicant with innovative (interactive, electronic, testable) developments: for the priority target group, the lookout development (view of anamorphous image and “recent viewing telescope”), the interior design of the Visitors’ Centre (lighter — projection screen wall), interactive “foam” wall, “foam” wall mobile applications, “selphic points”, children’s employment, drilling gauge in the casing, bath history showground, street furniture as demonstration sites. The sustainability of the results of the developments can be ensured by an increase in revenues, and in the case of investment project elements, the design and implementation of the investment project elements should aim to maximise the cost-effective operation of new facilities, both for the choice of raw materials and for the technologies to be used. One of the most important aspects of sustainability is effective and target-oriented marketing activities, which can sustain and further increase the number of visitors. TDM has a significant role to play in this area, with which the project promoter cooperates closely in the preparation and implementation of the project. In relation to the implementation of the project, a comprehensive partnership should be established between the actors during both the implementation and the exploitation phases. The cooperation between city management and health tourism stakeholders and the development of institutional systems is crucial for the status of the spa. The city owes a significant part of its guest traffic mainly to its spa, so it is important that cooperation in this area is of particular importance. Social and economic cooperation also plays a key role in order to realise the investments linked to the spa.
