Zengő’s treasure — Ecotourism development of the Zengő mountain

The highest peak of Mecsek in Baranya county is the Zengő. The public use of the geodetic measuring tower was originally banned and was opened to tourists in the year following its construction. However, the use of the tower is prohibited by the inscription referring to the danger of life as of 2010, so the beautiful view from the peak of the mountain is hidden. From the highest point of Baranya and the entire South Transdanubia, the peaks of Mecsek’s ridge would be clearly visible, along with the wavy backs of Szársomlyó and Tenkes hills to the south, and towards the east the corrugated back of the Mórágy granite clot. In clear weather you can see the Badacsony, the floodplain forests and the Papuk Mountains in Croatia. The mountain not only offers a beautiful view, but also thanks to its special microclimate, it is also home to rare plants, including the Banat bazzle and other protected plants. In the frame of the project a new lookout tower is set up at the peak of Zengő, at the foot of the Zengő in Pécsvárad, the conditions of tourist reception are set up at Dombay Lake, and a small-scale visitor and information centre presenting the sound and its wildlife will be established here as a related attraction. The planned location of the lookout tower is located in the outskirts of Pécsvárad, the manager of the forest is Mecsekerdő Zrt. The affected area is part of the East Mecsek Landscape Protection Area and is also a Natura 2000 site and a highly protected archaeological site. At the top we plan to create a lookout structure that ensures adequate security even if several tourists stay at the same time, and by integrating the structure into the landscape, it also provides visitors with an outstanding aesthetic experience. The exact determination of the lookout levels, the way in which they can be accessed, the use of materials will develop during the design and licensing processes, but we only think about the use of natural building materials (wood, stone). The visitor and information centre designed for the foot of Zengő is of particular importance in this area, since 90 % of the world population of the Carpathian Basin of the Banat Basin lives in Eastern Mecsek. When the Natura 2000 network was designated, all of the well-known domestic habitats of the Banat peony were included in the proposed priority areas of conservation, as part of the HUDD 20030 “Mecsek” area. In the Visitors’ Centre you will be informed about the sights and tourist routes of the surrounding area and will also be able to buy food, drink and souvenirs. As part of the business marketing, we plan the development of an integrated product package from several settlements, based on ecotourism, affecting the entire Eastern Mosques. After the tours, tourists can rest again in the surroundings of the Visitors’ Centre, where we provide them with the possibility of proper cleansing, free-fire grilling, cooking with bogs. Separate waste collectors will also be located on site. The establishment of the visitors’ centre and the lookout point aims to increase the role of Mecsek and its surroundings in tourism, with the aim of creating a positive living space for the inhabitants and tourists, under conditions that no longer burden the environment, protect and protect our natural values. The Centre intends to play a major role in the interactive education of the growing generation, teaching the love and respect of nature, and presenting the hidden treasures of the Mecsek. The long-term goal of the project is to bring together the elements of the eco- and active tourism programme currently existing in Mecsek and to transform it into a complex tourism product. In the case of the implementation of the investment and the related effective marketing activity, the stay of the tourists who visit the county can be increased for active and eco-tourism. This could lead to an increase in spending per tourist on the one hand, on the other side on the revenue of baranya accommodation providers, tourist service providers (typically SMEs) and indirectly on the tourism income of local authorities. In addition to the Baranya County Municipality, the Municipality of Pécsvárad and the Municipality of Baranya County will participate in the application as consortium partners. As a professional partner in the project, Mecsekerdő Zrt. will be involved. During the preparation and planning we pay special attention to the needs of the target group, the question of the operation and regular maintenance of the building, the economical solvability of these tasks and the long-term sustainability. The project is linked to other tourist attractions. The new Zengő lookout tower, which can be visited all year round, is expected to lead to an increase in the number of visitors in Püspökszentlászló, also known as another popular starting point of the Zengő tours, where the Pécs Diocese has recently implemented tourism development from DDOP sources and plans for further inves...
