Urban environmental improvement measures and economic development interventions in Jászberény

Jászberény’s aim is to strengthen the image of the green city, primarily to implement green space development interventions with complementary elements for transport and economic recovery. The development contributes most of the specific (thematic) objectives of ITS to the goal of creating an environmentally sustainable and attractive living environment (T4). The intervention offers the opportunity to make recreational use of the facilities offered by the city and its surroundings (T5) and strengthens the quality of the construction of transport networks and components (T6). By reconstructing the market, the project indirectly contributes to the strengthening of the local economy, job creation (T3) and population retention (T1) (by strengthening the internal image). As a whole, the project contributes to the development and sustainability of public spaces (V1.1). A further strong link can be observed with the aim of developing and facilitating market services (V1.4) and of introducing under-utilised buildings (V1.3) (in the latter case, by including the area of parking that can be connected to the market). Classification of the area concerned by means of zoning: Mixed area and zone of public parks (Vt and Z). The action area (also the City of the City) is a transforming administrative, cultural and commercial service centre of the city, with its residential function, where many public spaces and buildings have been renovated, thus reflecting the image of a modern yet traditional city centre. At the same time, the main square itself (Lehel’s main square) is struggling with the consequences of transit traffic, the Urban Market is waiting for settlement, the inner city structures require reflection (providing interoperability) the smaller shops cannot renew themselves on their own and there are still unutilised buildings and areas in the city centre. Based on the possibilities, the planned intervention will address the shortcomings, keeping the direction of development of the city centre along the strategic lines. The main element of the Green City project is the renewal of Lehel’s main square and its two related streets (Andras Holló and Dérné utca), with particular regard to the renewal and expansion of the green surfaces that form part of the internal ecological network, with infrastructure interventions that improve sustainability. The economic element of the development is the comprehensive development of the Urban Market and the rehabilitation of the related areas, which is also linked to the development of a public-purpose package with legal basis. Another element is the creation of a public area from a closed yard in the courtyard of the Mayor’s Office, during which the interoperability of the plot will be ensured with the dismantling of buildings. The two soft elements of the project strengthen the public and administrative embedding of development interventions. The development covers core activities A and B.
