Construction of walking and cycling paths between Virág Mohács street and the Residential Telecom — Újváros and the renovation of the pedestrian and cycling paths in Szabadság street and Dózsa Gy. street

The town of Mohács is located in the catchment areas of two major county seats, Pécs and Szekszárd, and due to its border control, it is the main centre of North-South trade. It is located in the country’s good agricultural area along the Danube. The city is located on the edge of the country’s economic and technological core area, on the outer metropolitan ring. It is part of the agglomerating area of Pécs. The complex catchment area of the settlement does not coincide with the administrative boundaries of the district, although the immediate catchment area of the town is mainly the settlements of the district, including neighbouring, easily accessible settlements. Mohács is the third largest city in Baranya County. Its population is steadily declining, backed by high natural weight loss (the ageing index is above the national average) and a negative migration balance. In 2011, the unemployment rate of the total population was 8 % (17 % of the economically active population) and the employment rate is below 40 %. The city has an appropriate network of institutions. The settlement has significant spatial planning power, which can be traced back to its past and traditions. The town has a strong civic presence and a cultural and tourist centre in the district, and it also places a prominent role in high-level sport and leisure sport in the settlement. A significant part of the city’s interior is dominated by residential functions. The institutional functions can be linked to the city centre (education — culture — administration) and the sub-centres (Szepessy park area — education, health care, social care and the central part of the housing estate — education, commerce). Commercial and service units were formed in the larger streets. A larger shopping centre was built next to the entrance section of road 57. Industrial functions are fortunately separated from the residential area: they are located along the northern entrance section of road 56 (Budapest Highway) and in the area of an industrial park to the west. An industrial facility in a residential area is the iron foundry alone. It is one of the characteristics of the town with its friendly press houses. Almost all of the city’s urban areas, with the exception of transport and green areas, are built-in or intended for installation. The development areas defined in the current urban structure plan, aimed primarily at the placement of residential and economic functions, are connected to areas with similar land use already established. These areas are currently farmed and involve abandonment. In the Integrated Urban Development Strategy, the Municipality of Mohács set the development goals to be achieved by 2023, in line with the urban development concept and the EU2020 strategy. In order to achieve the vision and overall objectives set out in the strategy, 8 medium-term thematic objectives have been set at urban level. These include improving the conditions for sustainable transport, alternative modes of transport and increasing the number of cyclists and pedestrians. The city of Mohács has been awarded the title “Biékpáros Friendly Town 2015”. The project aims, on the one hand, to improve the conditions for sustainable, cycling-friendly transport through the construction of a cycle path between the part of the municipality and the residential part of the municipality accessible outside the urban area, and between the workplaces located outside the urban area and the inner part of the municipality; on the other hand, the refurbishment of the bicycle road, which is now worn out and is dangerous for accidents, was built in the central part of the village in the early two thousand years. The investment covered by the project concerns several implementation sites which are not physically linked to each other. Development of the city’s cycle path network in three different but intrinsically linked areas for cycling: it takes place in the NY part of the city (along the Flower Street), a section connecting to the New Town (central field) and along the main street leading out of the city centre, Dózsa Gy. Street. The already existing cycle paths do not connect these parts of the territory and therefore it is not safe to travel by bicycle or on foot. As a result, individual car and public transport is more often used by those living there to gain access to the city. In the framework of this project, the bicycle path between Pécsi út — 5607 would be connected by crossing the Liszt F. Street section with the city centre and the residential estate in the western part of the city with Újváros and the interurban bus stops. Planned 1.170 m (Flower Street: 340 m; interconnector: 830 m) a cycle path will be built and 662 m will be refurbished during the implementation. On the one hand, the development will ensure safe, comfortable transport conditions for all users, while contributing to the improvement of transport conditions for sustainable modes of transport.
