Expansion of Herman Ottó Museum and development of its environment

The aim of the project is to create a new, complex, experience-oriented tourist attraction through the expansion of the Herman Ottó Museum and the organisation of its surroundings. The project is implemented in the form of a consortium, the Miskolc Mindszent Roman Catholic Parish is a consortium partner. As a result of the development, the current building of the museum will be expanded with a two-storey exhibition space, where three exhibition units will be located: the unique collection of folk costumes collected by György Barna and previously purchased by the city. The collection representing the whole Carpathian Basin presents the diverse world of Hungarian ethnography with the help of 180 costumed puppets. The museum’s collection of fine arts, which has recently been complemented by an extremely valuable collection unit with the Kövesi collection, contains the pieces of the Hungarian painting from the second half of the 19th century that represent a real attraction. Besides this, as the only one in Hungary, a fake art exhibition (also relying on the museum’s collection) will be established. This provides an interpretative opportunity for visitors to experience the world of fine arts more easily and in a more experiential way. On the one hand, the project to be implemented by the consortium partner restores the historical state of the area, renews one of the emblematic but degraded and limited sights of the city’s memory of the Avas Calvary, with the golgot on top and the neo-gothic and historical chapel built at the end of the 19th century. The project will create a single, open space, creating a new cultural and tourist centre on the axes of the Folk Garden and Avas, which at the same time corresponds to historical traditions. For both consortia partners, the primary objective is a novel interpretation that integrates historical and cultural traditions into the development of innovative, complex experiences with the most modern tools of interpretation, the state of the art of welcoming guests, including the necessary reception areas, service facilities (buffet, souvenir shop, etc.). The project contributes directly and indirectly to the development of the economy and the expansion of business opportunities for SMEs. The expansion of the Herman Ottó Museum is a project element net, and activities aimed at improving its environment are recorded in a gross manner. The municipality is a member of the TDM organisation, the municipality undertakes to meet the conditions set out in point 3.2 of the call during the implementation and maintenance period. The detailed description of the compliance with the substantive assessment criteria is explained in the business plan, which we intend to submit during the project development phase.
