Castle Szolnok! — Development of the Castle District of Szolnok for tourist purposes

Szolnok Art Colony has outstanding cultural, artistic and touristic potential. The City’s Integrated Urban Development Strategy (IVS) as a medium-term urban development strategy document addresses the area as a priority development area. The city of Szolnok was placed on the national tourist map with the opening of the RepTár Air Museum and the Interactive Beer Museum in 2016. In addition to tourism’s leading products, however, it is necessary to complement the tourist offer with additional smaller volumes of attractiveness, thereby encouraging more days of stay and increasing tourism revenues. The 113-year-old Szolnok Art Colony, as the oldest art colony in the country over the past 12 years, due to the reconstruction of 2002, the operation of the Garden Gallery and its outstanding professional work at national level, and its location in the middle of the castle district, is an important artistic and cultural tourist site of the city. The area of the settlement is open to the visitors, it is also included in the attractiveness inventory of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County through the high-quality artistic activities, exhibitions, exhibitions and cultural events in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County. The Artists’ Colony is located on the territory of the former Szolnok Castle, which was of national importance in the Turkish-era, but today it has disappeared almost without a trace. Despite this, the castle is a very important part of Szolnok’s identity and its destruction is still not a healing wound in the history of the city. The direct aim of the project is to visualise the former fortress with architectural, artistic and virtual tools and to present it to the visitors in an experiential way. The project will create a new attraction based on the cultural features of the city. The Szolnok VÁR! Visitor Centre will be built, which, in its architectural appearance, will stylise the gate tower of the final castle standing here with modern architectural solutions. On the ground floor of the inn building there is a Turkish café, the first raised small interactive castle exhibition, a lookout terrace on the roof. The so-called “Artistic Tower” located in the garden of Artists’ colony is being renovated, as an event space and as an exhibition space, built by artists living here at the beginning of the century from the stones of the former castle. The functions of the tower, as well as the visitors’ centre, will be clarified during the preparation phase after the submission of the application, in addition to the acceptance of the technical criteria set out in the call. The development also includes the display of other parts of Szolnok Castle. On the section running from the Nyáry Lőrinc Bridge to the Bástya Street on Zagyva-gát, a promenade with ornamental covering is built with street lighting (approx. 1 900 m²). The parapet of the promenade is built in an imitating form of the former castle wall. (approximately 350fm) The aim is not the exact reconstruction, only to summon and make visible the palánkvár. We design the characteristic elements of the castle with the means of art. As part of the development, stations will be set up with the help of artists visiting the local and art colony, identifying visible, existing parts of the castle and displaying the parts of the castle that have been destroyed over time. (e.g. Budai Gate, Eger Gate, Water Gate, Bastions, Turkish Jam, Turkish Well) As a related development, the immediate surroundings of the reception building are being repaired and the Damjanich Park is organised. A thematic playground will be created in the park. The Nyáry Lőrinc Bridge will be renewed with new barriers and the replacement of the candelegers and the designation of a bicycle lane. Next to the bridgehead there is a bicycle stop. In parallel with the current development, two other TOP-funded projects will allow visitors to travel from the project site by bicycle to the park of the former lung hospital and from there to the tourist destination in Milléri. Also in connection with the development, a parking space is created to serve the new functions on the right side of Zagyva, opposite the reception building. The marketing activities related to the marketing of Szolnok Art Colony and Castle as a new tourist product are also part of the project. Of the individual eligible activities listed in the call for proposals under the project, the activities of point (a) of activity type A will be implemented. In connection with the presentation of the tourist values of the former castle as a cultural heritage and the artist’s colony, construction and renovation activities, the creation of conditions for the reception of tourists, with visitors-friendly features and services, complex tourism information service, interactive presentation forms and weather are all part of the project, independent, tailored to the needs of the target group. Among the optional activities of point 3.1.2 which cannot be independent...
