Refurbishment of Tulipos House for tourist purposes

The economic organisation power of Tatabánya, which can be regarded as a successful industrial city among our mining, industrialised cities, also has significant tourist potential. Due to its favourable traffic and spatial structure, the proximity of European cities and their connection to a well-developed infrastructure network, it can be a major tourist attraction in the future by creating a unique offer of attractions in the region. There is also a significant tourist potential for the city’s mining and mining industry traditions and its attractions embodying preserved traditions, among which the former Mine Officer Casino is of paramount importance. The building, also known as the Tulipan House, is one of the most important elements of the development of Tatabánya’s mining industry and the architectural development of the city. Today is a monument. It was built in the 1920s in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style, but it also features baroque and classicising style elements. The building initially provided entertainment and cultural opportunity for the chief officials of the Hungarian General Coal Mine Rt. After nationalisation after 1945, it was used for various purposes as a party institution and then as the seat of a state company, but after the change of regime it was unused, which led to a significant deterioration. The municipality purchased the building in 2014 and has since carried out the most important conservation works and started the preparation and planning tasks of the building for community purposes. This was in line with the legitimate public demand for the preservation and enhancement of the city’s natural and built environmental activities, as well as the public ownership of old, valuable urban real estates. The municipality’s intention is to serve the building for community purposes after the renovation. The building — as is the case with most of the buildings referring to the mining history of the settlement, which shapes its character — in the Tatabánya-Old Town district. Some special industrial monuments (transport runway, downfalls) were preserved in connection with the mining history and traditions in the city area. This is where the industrial skansen, which can be visited at the present time, has been developed, which is the last plant in the coal basin. The refurbishment of the Tulipos House is in line with the renovation of the part of the town already started, one of the most important projects of which was the reconstruction of the Theatre (Népház) near the building, surrounded by the ancient park. The building was built by the Hungarian State Coal Mines Rt. in the 1910s as a cultural institution. The recently completed project entitled ‘Tradition and Renewal in Old Town’ included the renewal of the 1st May park in the immediate vicinity of the Tulipanos House and the renovation of the building of the old post office under local protection — ex-municipal house — and the Modern Cities Programme is expected to find a new function for the former mine hospital. Building on the existing socio-cultural conditions, the unique industrial heritage and the opportunities offered by the natural environment, the city intends to continue the previous successful developments in such a way as to create attractions that are integral to the county’s tourist potential and lead to gradually expanding visitors. Therefore, one of the objectives of the Tatabánya Integrated Urban Development Strategy is the development of sustainable tourism and recreation services at regional level. This includes the qualitative and quantitative development of leisure and tourism services, the development of the natural and economic environment, the expansion and renewal of public spaces and the development of services. The local, regional, cultural, built heritage and the use of natural conditions as a tourist offer element serves to achieve these objectives, which helps to increase the circulation of tourism in the city, to diversify and revitalise the local economy and thus to increase employment. The renovation and tourist utilisation of the Tulipos House is one of the most significant projects in the city. It is therefore of particular importance that it is not only included in the urban development documents, but also appears in the Cooperation Agreement between the Municipality and the Government signed in the Modern Cities Progrem framework on 22 March, and on its implementation. (V. 13.) also in Government Decision (point 5.a). 1) The aim of the project is to: One of the thematic objectives of the Tatabánya ITS is the development of sustainable tourism and recreation services at regional level, which includes the qualitative and quantitative development of recreational and tourist services, the renewal of the natural and economic environment, the development of services and the strengthening of service-type enterprises. The aim is to provide quality complementary services to tourists and the loca...
