Tourist development of St. Michael’s Church and Sekrestyésház

Sopron is the city of museums, the historical city centre of which is one of the richest, coherent, historical and compositional units left to us in monuments, protected buildings and archaeological monuments. Within the administrative boundaries of the city there are 332 registered archaeological sites, of which 130 are highly protected. In Sopron there are also 444 monuments, 402 monumental environments and 1 area of monumental importance (a site of historical importance created on the site of the downtown and the surrounding moor). More than 90 percent of the city’s monuments are concentrated in the city centre area of historic importance. Hungary was the second richest city in monuments to receive the gold medal of the Europe Prize for the Protection of Monuments in 1975. It represents a unique environmental value in Hungary, its historical monuments are characterised by Celtic — Roman — Gothic — Baroque and Renaissance centers, but the atmosphere of the rural districts created with wine cellars is also decisive. The valuable exhibition materials of museums and collections provide a complete picture of Sopron’s historical monuments, rich culture and vibrant artistic life. Tourism has long been particularly important in the city’s economy, in which a number of other factors have a combined effect: specific natural environment and climatic conditions in the domestic context (climatic health status); Lake Fertő and the Fertő-Hanság National Park as a world heritage cultural landscape (favorable for the active and eco-elements of the complex tourism offer); the ever-changing, evolving border city role (in history: transit route, inclusion area, symbolic border opening; after the change of regime, the destination of shopping and then service tourism, domestically the symbol of proximity to the west); the Pan-European Picnik memorial has been awarded the European Heritage Label (favorite for strengthening cultural and historical tourism); additional attractions in the surrounding settlements (Fertőrákos, Fertőd, Nagycenk); Close links between Burgenland and Sopron (rivalisation and cooperation in parallel; Sopron is often the starting point for tourism in Burgenland). Sopron stands out from the outstanding cultural and architectural value of the Fire Tower with the Gothic Grand Hall of Fabricius House and the remains of the Roman bath, the Scarbantia Forum (the only forum built according to the Italian pattern in the land of Pannonia), the Kecske church, the Baroque Storno house, which is more than 700 years old, the building of the Petőfi Theatre, the Old and New Synagogues, the Church of St. Michael, the House of Pharmacy, the Baker House, the General House, the Gambrinus House, the Eggenberg House, the Cézár House, the Two Moors House, the Iron House, the Town Hall and the Castle County House, the Postal Palace, the Zichy-Meskó Palace, etc. In addition to the main square, it is important to mention Orsolya Square, Kisvár District, Ógabona Square, Petőfi Square, Széchenyi Square and Deák Square, and the Botanical Garden and Erzsébet Garden among the larger interrelated green spaces. As a result of the urban regeneration projects implemented in recent years, the structural reinforcement and general renovation of the Fire Tower, the development of the Museum Information and Inn Centre (key point) and the key point cafe, the rehabilitation of the Main Square, the expansion and making accessible of the Castlefalsány have been completed, and the I. phase of the renewal of the Castle District has been realised. The different tourist attractions and service providers are integrated into a single system by the Sopron Region Tourism Center Nonprofit Kft., which has been active since 2013, thereby taking the first steps towards unified city marketing. At the same time, there is still limited financial resources for urban maturation activities, with major infrastructure developments only possible with external support. Despite many developments in recent years, several monuments are still underused, and there are few modern, experience-oriented museums in the city — i.e. their tourist attraction is lagging behind their potential. The offer of the program appears to be significant, but these — partly due to the limited space utilisation of the historic buildings — tend to move only smaller crowds (in addition to the VOLT festival that attracts serious international guests, the outdoor programmes, concerts and exhibitions of Sopron Holiday Weeks can be considered as major events at national level). In Sopron, the average occupancy rate of commercial accommodation in Sopron is the highest among the cities with county rights (above 30 %) — as well as in terms of the number of nights spent there (however, among non-county towns, spa towns and two lakeside settlements precede our city). The average stay in Sopron is 2.4 nights, which is slightly higher than the average of the towns with county rights — a clear goal to i...
