There is a great need in Europe for a laboratory site with innovative facilities and equipment to accelerate the development and market uptake of biobased and circular polymers in sustainable applications. Despite the increasing number of initiatives, the successful implementation of biobased and circular innovations is still lagging behind. To develop new innovative and market-oriented, sustainable polymer applications, companies need specialist facilities, equipment and knowledge. The applicant and its investment partners therefore want to set up an open innovation test and pilot environment with laboratory facilities at the emmtec Industry &Amp; Businesspark in Emmen, which brings together companies and knowledge institutions in a unique way and facilitates the testing, development and implementation of biobased and recycling innovations. The Sustainable Polymer Innovations Cluster (SPIC) will provide companies and research institutes with the opportunity to use a large analytical lab for polymer development and research and, on the other hand, specialised R&D equipment that allows market players to carry out pilot and production tests under realistic conditions. The project builds on extensive knowledge and experience around polyesters and polyamides in Emmen. The testing ground leads to the promotion of activity and education and to better positioning Northern Netherlands as a knowledge region. Finally, SPIC’s objective is to reduce the ecological footprint that humans have on the planet.
