Virtual Reality against Covid-19

In the media, politics and care, after the outbreak of Covid-19 within the Netherlands, there was a primary focus on scaling up the IC capacity (the number of beds) and introducing preventive measures to reduce the peak in the number of IC beds needed. The IC capacity was the first bottleneck in healthcare as a result of Covid-19, but in the longer term, many more bottlenecks in healthcare are foreseen. Rehabilitation clinics see a significant influx of patients who, although recovered from Covid-19, have been severely weakened by hospitalisation. On the one hand, a peak demand for rehabilitation care is expected for patients recovering from Covid-19 and, on the other hand, a peak demand for mental care for people who fall mentally due to major changes in (social) lives as an indirect consequence of Covid-19. These two types of care are of a longer duration than IC care and will, given the accumulation of patients, put a long-term pressure on healthcare.Within this project, the aim is to gain knowledge of symptoms and needs of 1) patients recovering from Covid-19 and 2) patients who are mentally falling out (or are at risk of falling out) due to major changes in (social) lives indirectly due to Covid-19. The aim is then to develop a mental therapeutic treatment by means of a multidisciplinary study. This method will consist of a multidisciplinary treatment protocol for healthcare professionals and a mental therapeutic intervention based on Virtual Reality, which can be used at the beginning of the treatment process. The intervention will consist of a combination of an educational component (information about Covid-19, how you can feel yourself through it, what stress regulating exercises you can apply) and a simulation/game component in which it visualises how the virus itself is fought in the body. With this intervention, it is intended to provide part of the therapy without active guidance from a healthcare professional, being a physiotherapist, psychiatrist or other rehabilitation professional. In this way, mental care is provided remotely and physical pain can be combated or prevented. If found to be effective, this method of treatment will significantly alleviate the pressure on healthcare as this intervention will be a significant or possibly complete replacement of the care pathway by healthcare professionals in some of the patients and, in the remaining part of the patients, ensures that they are better prepared into the pathway with the healthcare professional and therefore need less intensive guidance by healthcare professionals. The intervention can therefore also be used as an alternative to a waiting list. In this way, the first care can be provided remotely and the necessary care can be significantly scaled up by increasing the “span of control” per healthcare professional. The project is carried out by;1.Reducept B.V. (Penvoerer); Leeuwarden-based developer of Virtual Reality applications for care, with 6 employees with specific expertise in the fight against chronic pain through VR technology.2.Sa4 Zorg, Leeuwarden location (main establishment); provider of rehabilitation care for, among other things, depression and anxiety disorders, with specific focus on the combination of mental and physical care.3.Physiopractice Bilgaard; Leeuwarden-based physiological practice with 9 employees working closely with Sa4zorg and jointly focusing with Sa4 Zorg on the multidisciplinary treatment of patients who have a combination of mental psychological symptoms.4.Friese Coöperation Physical Therapists; Berltsum based organisation in which all 24 physiotherapy practices in Friesland that meet the highest quality requirements of health insurers are affiliated.5.NHL Stenden, Department of Serious Gaming; most prominent research institute in the field of serious gaming in the Netherlands. Has access to a department with highly regarded lecturer and 8 professional researchers, a research centre, laboratory and MSc students serious gaming.
