Information and communication technology (ICT) in our modern society is ‘everywhere’. New forms will be at the heart of emerging technologies such as robots, drones, self-driving vehicles, tourism, smart farming, smart factories and new medical devices over the next five years. It opens the way to new applications that are more efficient and therefore more sustainable. In many cases, the data is recorded and transported in the known way via cable or fiber. However, there are more and more situations where part of the data ‘passes through the air’: wireless data transport. That can start from the rain sensor at the farm up to the 5G connection to further redirect video data. The application of these wireless applications seems obvious, but their design does not go by itself. The Wireless Data Lab provides (starting) entrepreneurs from the Northern Netherlands with the need for technical support in the development of new products/services in which wireless technology in particular (Radio Frequency or for short RF technology) is used. The Wireless Data Lab is clearly complementary to other labs in the North of the Netherlands. The Wireless-Data Lab is a place where advanced design software, high-quality measuring equipment, technical expertise and a network of innovation advisors come together. Everything at the service of an entrepreneur who wants to turn an idea for an innovativewireless application into a complete product.ASTRON in Dwingeloo (Drenthe) has a lot of knowledge and experience in building Radio Frequency (RF) systems because of her astronomical research with radio telescopes. Wireless technology is in fact the heart of its advanced radio telescopes. For this purpose, ASTRON has an operational Laboratory with an extensive RF design department and advanced (costable) measuring instruments. ASTRON’s radio telescopes are of world fame. Thanks to this Wireless-Data ERDF lab project, theseunique facilities can also be made accessible to companies that start or are already developing their own wireless applications. In the Wireless Data Lab, entrepreneurs can test the wireless application they have developed against the applicable environmental conditions. These components may have to be validated in the final phase from development (TRL-5) to (sub)systems that must already be demonstrated in a real environment. Both indoor facilities and the outdoor testing facilities of the ASTRON laboratory will be used for this purpose. To make ASTRON’s facilities more efficient accessible to third parties, it is necessary to adapt the RFmeet facilities so that an end-to-end state-of-the-art Wireless-Data-Lab can be offered. During the lifetime of this project, actions will focus on knowledge dissemination: A compact 1-day training course is offered in which the technical do’s and don'ts of wireless technology are taught. In order to increase the attractiveness of non-Dutch-speaking workers in the region, an English-language 4-day course “Applied RF technology” will be developed to allow a further deepening of inwireless technology. One-on-one knowledge dessimination is offered in the form of “expert brainstorm” sessions with ASTRON experts and the entrepreneur who is in the first phase of a product idea. In the test garden, sustainable knowledge is conveyed that is available after the project period. After all,ASTRON also benefits from an eco-structure that shares the knowledge of a new generation of wireless technology. In order to identify the companies active with ‘wireless data’, cooperation is sought with Northern Business Innovation Network organisations such as IkBenDrents Ondernemer, Ynbusiness and 5Groningen.To this end, a number of meetings for entrepreneurs will be organised in this ‘Wireless data’ laboratory to raise awareness of the new possibilities of wireless applications. ASTRON will also activate its relations with other Northern networks such as “Smart industry”, Northern Hubs and the other testing groundsThe international setting of ASTRON can lead foreign companies to settle in the region because they are assured of an eco-system of high-tech experts. ASTRON’s Wireless Data Lab is a foundation for companies that want to realise new products.
