Chemical recycling of challenging residual streams to top quality rPET

Cure Technology, Holland Colours, NHL Stenden and University of Groningen, accompanied by grant consultancy Asqa Subsidies, are working on a complete circular chain solution for the textile and carpet industry in this valoration project. The aim is to develop a well-acting pilot plant process for the processing of residual flows from the textile and carpet industry into transparent polyester granules and the repolymerisation into a circular polyester speciality of very high quality (foodgrade quality). For this purpose, several new techniques will have to be explored and developed in the pilot plant for processing this type of highly polluted and highly coloured feedstocks and the treatment of mixed waste streams such as polyester with cotton. For example, the vast majority of textile waste (70 %) consists of yarns made up of a blend of cotton and polyester fibres (polycotton). The upcycling of this mixed polycotton waste stream for reuse of cotton and polyester is in practice a significant problem for which industrially applicable processes have not yet been developed. The same applies to other polyester residual flows from the textile and carpet industry. To achieve the goal of a complete circular chain solution for multiple industries, Cure Technologie will expand its current pilot plant with a pilot plant for the Waste Preparation (including shredden, washing, agglomerating, metal removal, separation) and purification equipment for the Purification (removal of dyes, additives and other polymers). Finally, within this valorisation project, processing routes will also be developed for repolymerising and postcondensing to foodgrade quality polyester.
