BizWood Småland

Småland is the centre of the wood industry in Sweden and its continued development is important for employment and profitable forestry. The Småland wood industry consists mainly of small and medium-sized enterprises. Many of them have limited opportunities to develop new markets and new products/customer solutions. The coniferous and hardwood industry has different structures and business models. The wood industry has a strong and complete value chain and works mainly with standard ranges in large volumes and low margins. The industry is highly export-dependent and new emerging markets in Asia require special efforts to enter. The hardwood industry is developing poorly. Despite 18 % deciduous forest and high demand both at home and globally, most hardwood goes to pulp production and fuelwood in Sweden. Almost all hardwood for the Swedish furniture and interior design industry is imported. The hardwood industry lacks a functioning value chain. The project aims to support the wood companies in: 1) Internationalisation — by creating long-term business relationships with wood industries (both coniferous and non-coniferous) in new emerging markets in Asia; 2) product development/business development — by developing examples of new types of hardwood products that can inspire companies to innovation and business development. The project will contribute to a long-term formation process of a complete value chain for the hardwood industry in Småland and Sweden.
