The maintenance team of Verbi Gereedschappen BV now consists of four employees who provide maintenance for Verbi’s customers. The employees excel in craftsmanship and technical ability to carry out their work, but are not themselves able to advise customers on the maintenance of their moulds. There is a need for a different type of skills among these employees that is more focused on communication and advisory skills. Employees want to be more focused on providing services and advice to their customers on the lifetime and maintenance of the molds. Verbi’s staff experience that it is difficult to make an adequate shift towards this entirely new approach; other skills and competences are required. Given that this knowledge and skills on certain facets are insufficient among employees, they experience the need to be able to do so. Where they previously worked well as excellent technical specialists, they now need to learn communication and advisory skills to their customers. On the basis of interviews and workshops, Adviceburo Altran wants to give the maintenance staff more insight and knowledge about the wishes of clients regarding the maintenance of their moulds. Altran’s advisors will then explain to Verbi’s employees how they can respond to this knowledge and insights about maintenance. During the workshops, employees will practice providing advice and communicating with “customers”. By focusing on improving non-business-specific knowledge and skills, this project gives employees a better competitive position in the Dutch labour market. Additional indirect objectives could be: higher employee satisfaction, more fun in the workplace and increased loyalty to the organisation.
