Transforming a Historic Venue into a Hub for Culture, Innovation, and Technology
Overview: The Wintercircus in Ghent, Belgium, originally built in 1885 as a permanent circus venue, has undergone a significant transformation into a multifunctional public facility. After serving various purposes—including a garage and a depot for vintage cars—the building was largely abandoned until its recent renovation. The revitalized Wintercircus now serves as a vibrant hub for culture, entrepreneurship, and innovation, featuring a concert hall, co-working spaces, and public amenities.
Objectives:
- Preserve Historical Significance: Restore and repurpose the historic Wintercircus building while maintaining its architectural heritage.
- Foster Innovation: Create a dynamic environment that supports technology startups and scale-ups through co-working spaces and collaborative opportunities.
- Enhance Cultural Life: Provide a venue for cultural events, including concerts and exhibitions, to enrich the local community.
- Promote Public Engagement: Develop accessible public spaces, such as a central plaza and dining establishments, to encourage community interaction.
Key Features:
- Concert Hall: An underground concert hall with a capacity of 500 seats, designed to host a variety of performances.
- Co-Working Spaces: Approximately 4,350 m² dedicated to co-working and office facilities for creative and technology-focused enterprises.
- Public Plaza: The former circus arena has been transformed into a 1,200 m² covered public square, accessible via three entrances, serving as the heart of the building.
- Dining and Retail: On-site amenities include a café, restaurant, and shops, enhancing the building's role as a community gathering place.
Target Audience:
- Local Residents and Visitors: Individuals seeking cultural experiences and communal spaces in Ghent.
- Entrepreneurs and Startups: Technology and creative sector professionals looking for collaborative work environments.
- Cultural Organizations: Groups interested in utilizing the venue for events and performances.
- Tourists: Visitors to Ghent seeking unique cultural and historical sites.
Impact: The renovation of the Wintercircus has revitalized a previously neglected area in Ghent, contributing to urban renewal and economic development. By preserving the building's historical elements while introducing modern functionalities, the project has created a unique space that bridges the past and present. It serves as a model for sustainable urban redevelopment, fostering innovation and cultural engagement within the community. European Commission
