Collaborative Efforts for Environmental Protection in the Romania-Serbia Border Region
Overview: The RoS-NET2 project addresses the environmental challenges posed by copper mining activities in the cross-border areas of Moldova Nouă (Romania) and Bor (Serbia), regions with approximately 25,000 inhabitants affected by pollution. Recognizing the essential role of copper in various industries and the consequent necessity of its extraction, the project aims to assess water quality, propose remediation methods, and promote environmental education to mitigate the adverse effects of mining operations.
Keep
Objectives:
- Assess Water Quality: Conduct physicochemical and toxicological analyses of water streams impacted by copper mining activities.
- Develop Remediation Solutions: Identify and propose effective methods to remediate polluted water bodies.
- Promote Environmental Education: Raise awareness and educate the public, especially youth, about environmental issues related to mining operations.
- Enhance Cross-Border Collaboration: Leverage complementary research facilities and expertise between Romanian and Serbian partners to address shared environmental challenges.
Key Features:
- Public Knowledge Base: Creation of a publicly accessible database containing detailed analyses of water quality and proposed remediation strategies.
- Scientific Studies: Publication of two comprehensive studies detailing the current state of water streams and recommended remediation procedures.
- Capacity Building Initiatives: Organization of training sessions, awareness campaigns, and events involving over 5,500 participants, including youth, professionals, and the general public.
- Acquisition of Advanced Instruments: Procurement of three state-of-the-art instruments to enhance cross-border environmental protection services.
Target Audience:
- Local communities in Moldova Nouă and Bor affected by mining pollution.
- Environmental researchers and professionals.
- Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on environmental protection.
- Local, regional, and national authorities responsible for environmental management.
