Enhancing Urban Climate Resilience through Community-Driven Blue-Green Solutions
Overview: The BEGIN project is a collaborative initiative involving ten European cities and six research institutions, aimed at enhancing urban climate resilience by integrating Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) with social innovation. By co-creating solutions with local communities, BEGIN addresses challenges such as flooding, urban heat islands, and poor air quality, while simultaneously improving urban livability and fostering community engagement.
Objectives:
- Implement Blue-Green Infrastructure: Develop and deploy BGI solutions like green corridors and sustainable urban drainage systems to mitigate climate-related urban challenges.
- Promote Social Innovation: Engage citizens and stakeholders in the co-creation and maintenance of BGI, ensuring solutions are tailored to community needs.
- Enhance Climate Resilience: Strengthen cities' abilities to adapt to extreme weather events and climate change impacts through sustainable infrastructure.
Key Features:
- Transnational Collaboration: Partnership among cities and research institutions across six North Sea Region countries, facilitating knowledge exchange and joint implementation of BGI projects.
- Community Engagement: Active involvement of over 8,000 stakeholders, including citizens, businesses, and NGOs, in the design and upkeep of BGI initiatives.
- Demonstration Pilots: Implementation of 39 pilot projects showcasing effective BGI solutions co-created with local communities.
Target Audience:
