Landscape and Open Space Development in Alpine Metropolitan Areas

The globally attractive Alpine Space cities face common challenges through growing land use pressure. It strains vulnerable natural & cultural assets of periurban landscapes calling for multifunctional solutions, intersectorial and intermunicipal collaboration. Yet, this increases implementation barriers: complexity, various ownership patterns, more stakeholders with non-excludable interests. We will unleash the potential of periurban green infrastructure (GI) for sustainable development by improving governance and planning. The changes will commit stakeholders and enhance cooperation at all levels. LOS_DAMA! will boost the skilled use of advanced tools for negotiation, mediation and action. For innovation and impact, we will bridge the implementation gap, employing co-creation and informal / creative approaches (participative mapping, landscape stewardship). We will deliver feedback and implementation know-how to put EU/regional policies/strategies into effect. This will benefit public authorities and will enhance liveability. The partnership is the nucleus of a viable network of major Alpine cities promoting sustainable periurban and GI development. Seven local pilots will be embedded in a transnational context with scientific support. At local/regional level, IT-tools and up-to-date visualisation methods will support intersectorial implementation with stakeholders and the public. Twinning/peer-review will deliver transnational feedback to all governance levels and transferable principles and tools. Job-shadowing will create involvement; holistic communication and cooperation will raise interest and strengthen motivation. Alpine periurban landscapes share similar features. Only joint efforts create the powerful voice needed to raise awareness and initiate change for a balanced development and valorisation of these areas. With our set of pilots we will provide EUSALP with real world transnational insights in implementation and strengthen Alpine identity.
