Danube Cycle Plans: Enhancing Cycling Infrastructure and Policies in the Danube Region

Promoting Sustainable Mobility Across Nine Nations

Overview: The Danube Cycle Plans project, implemented between 2020 and 2022, aimed to elevate cycling as a viable and sustainable mode of transport throughout the Danube region. By fostering collaboration among nine countries—Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia—the project sought to develop cohesive cycling strategies, improve infrastructure, and integrate cycling into national and regional transport policies. Objectives:

  1. Develop National Cycling Strategies: Assist participating countries in formulating or updating their national cycling plans to promote cycling as an integral part of the transport system.
  2. Establish the Danube Cycle Route Network ("DanuVelo"): Define and promote a transnational cycling network to enhance connectivity and tourism across the region.
  3. Enhance Stakeholder Capacity: Organize mentoring sessions, national cycling conferences, and establish working groups to empower stakeholders in advancing cycling initiatives.
