Protection, promotion and development of traditional crafts in the cross-border area

This project has arisen from the need to develop the tourist potential of the cross-border area, namely the town of Bardejov (a royal town included in the UNESCO list) and the town of Grybów (also a royal town). Despite the great potential and competitiveness compared to other Programme sites, there are no innovative offers in tourism. The towns share a common history. Grybów is situated on a trade route from Bardejov up to the north of Poland. The route was used to transport products such as honey, wine, dried plums and, last but not least, craftwork. And craftwork is the common denominator and strong link between the two projects. Hand-crafted products are an important part of the cultural heritage of the borderland areas. The common elements of craftsmanship, the beauty of the products, as well as the craftsmen themselves will constitute the basis for the centres of traditional crafts that will be created in Bardejov and Grybów. The partners have at their disposal two magnificent, historic protected buildings. In Bardejov, there is a 14th century Franciscan monastery and in Grybów – a building of the former gymnastic association “Sokół”. Both buildings are in poor technical condition. Under the project, both buildings will undergo complex renovation. Some parts of the rooms will also require restoration works. Further on, rooms will be adapted for craft workshops for craftsmen living in the borderland area. Traditional crafts centres will be created this way and the space for presentations will be provided for crafts typical for the Polish and Slovak regions. People visiting the centres will not explore them passively but will also have an opportunity to try their hand at the craftsmen’s works. The project will support many joint promotional events. The creation of comprehensive cultural products will, on the one hand, satisfy the needs of the local population and, on the other – attract visitors to this place, thereby contributing to the development of tourism.
