From theory to practice - sustainable use of natural heritage in Ełk and Birštonas

Project contributes to the sustainable use and environmental protection of the heritage sites located in Ełk County in Poland and Birštonas municipality in Lithuania. On Polish side activities shall be implemented in the Protected Landscape Area of the Ełk Lake District, while on Lithuanian side project covers Great Nemunas Loops hydrological rezerve and Natura 2000 site Nemunas Loops. In the frame of the project these natural heritage sites will be developed and preserved: infrastructucture addressed to the visitots and tourists will be upgraded and special equipment installed. In parallel to the investment activities, the study visits for officials working in local governments or its' units emphasizing the importance of sustainable use of environment are planned. The aim of the soft activities is better understanding and commitment of the cross-border area decision making processes in the field of sustainable use of environment and and futher smooth practical implementation of the desisions. The expected project’s results seek not only to improve environment, but also to increase the attractiveness of the cross-border region in a sustainable way, without harming the nature.
