Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases – more than 400 000 Europeans die each year and the incidence of the disease has further increased with the COVID-19 pandemic. While effective treatment of patients with anticoagulants is possible in the initial phase, acute pulmonary embolism requires urgent interventional treatment. Currently, there are no methods on the market that would guarantee a fully effective and safe conduct of such procedures. The aim of the project is to change this state of affairs by developing and implementing an innovative medical device – the Birsen device. It will be adaptable to a wide range of sizes of pulmonary vascular anatomy catheter enabling the rapid and effective removal of highly organised clots typical of the acute phase of pulmonary embolism.
