The overall objective of the project is to develop the transport infrastructure of Sibiu International Airport through the construction/extension of the terminal, in order to ensure an extended air traffic, in conditions of maximum safety and an adequate level of security, in accordance with the European and national regulations in the field of air transport. The project “Modernisation and development of airport infrastructure — Economic activities” phase I contributes to the achievement of the specific objective OS 2.3 of the LIOP (the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme) — Increasing the sustainable use of airports as it aims to develop and improve the air transport system of one of the 21 airports in Romania, facilitating the achievement of the expected passenger flow, namely increasing the volume of passengers transited through Romanian airports. The project falls into type A of funded actions, according to the LIOP — New investment projects in airport infrastructure, having as objective the construction of terminals, accompanied by environmental protection measures. From the point of view of contributing to the achievement of the LIOP result indicators, OS 2.3, the successful implementation of the project determines the achievement of program indicator ID 2S17 — Modernised Airports (number): 1 modernised airport, i.e. ID 2S13 — Passengers boarded and disembarked in airport transport (million passengers/year): 2,538,160 passengers.
