“Extension of Calafat Port infrastructure (km 795) and systematisation of the port’s railway device” — Stage I

The project is part of the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme LIOP 2014-2020, Priority Axis 1 Improving mobility through the development of the TEN-T network and metro, Specific Objective 1.3 Increasing the use of waterways and ports located on the TEN-T core network. A.P: 1 The development of a multimodal, quality, sustainable and efficient transport system aims at thematic objective 07 “Promoting sustainable transport systems and removing bottlenecks in major network infrastructures” of Regulation 1303/2013, aiming at supporting investments in the transport sector to increase the accessibility of regions and populations by building/upgrading the road network, at European standards, in particular at the level of the TEN-T network, by rehabilitating and modernising the rail network to European standards, increasing the attractiveness of shipping by improving navigation conditions and mobility on the core TEN-T network, as well as investments in port infrastructure. The project aims to modernise the port infrastructure in Calafat Port in order to handle an increased volume of cargo, under competitive conditions, being part of the following actions specific to O.S. 1.3: • Modernisation and capacity development of ports located on the core TEN-T network, including intermodal transport components In line with the provisions of the LIOP, Priority Axis 1, Specific Objective 1.3 aims to increase the use of waterways and ports located on the TEN-T core network. In order to increase the attractiveness of shipping and, implicitly, the corresponding market share, the LIOP foresees the need for concerted interventions in two major directions: • Eliminate/reduce navigational deficiencies on the Danube and its canals and improve their maintenance in order to increase the airworthiness period and travel speed; • Modernisation of port infrastructure in order to handle an increased volume of cargo under competitive conditions. The project proposed for financing falls in the second direction of intervention, contributing to the modernisation of the port infrastructure in order to handle an increased volume of cargo, under competitive conditions. The project contributes to increasing efficiency in loading and unloading operations of goods arriving in/leaving the port by road. Increased efficiency leads to increased infrastructure capacity (by being able to operate a larger volume of cargo in a shorter time). The implementation of the proposed project will contribute to the achievement of the LIOP objectives regarding "inland waterway freight increase by 20 % by 2023 compared to the 2013 reference value and to the achievement of the result indicator of Priority Axis 1: 2S3 Inland waterway transportable goods. In 2013, the port of Calafat was
